As an artist, writer, student rabbi and coach, my work sits at the meeting point of spiritual learning and creative practice.

Words are at the centre of all my work.

ART

Handwritten words are the most personal way to make a mark in the world.

My art contains fragments of recognisable words as well as aesemic writing. Written thoughts lie concealed under layers. Personal graffiti-like tags add personal expression. I combine the words with colours  and images garnered from world travels. By rearranging and concealing the original language I invite the viewer to bring their own meaning to the art.

I am inspired by the contemporary marks made by graffiti writers, the forms of Hebrew letters and the pictograms that preceded that old language.  Whilst my art is mostly abstract, it contains hidden traces of the ancient Jewish wisdom literature and the modern commentaries on it which influence my thoughts as I work.

I make paintings, artist books and art quilts. Occasionally I experiment with bowls and more sculptural forms.

Each work of art is accompanied by an article about my inspiration and the creative process involved.

ENCORE PUBLICATION

Words allow us to see the world through another person’s eyes.

Living in today’s word compels us to contemplate issues of social justice and environmental change. We are challenged to both see the incredible beauty in the world and its many peoples and also to contemplate how we might contribute to the process of  tikkun olam – repair of the world – in respect of that which is broken.

In my Substack publication Encore, I write about what it means to live creatively, not only in terms of art making and creative writing but also the creative energy required to make the world a better place.

COACHING

Words, when shared, bring release from problems and release the power that lies in telling new stories.

Creativity brings both great joy and real struggles. Often we feel stuck and lonely, unable to figure out how to get back to the ease of creative flow. The fact that creators often work in solitude can exacerbate the problem.  For many, this dammed up creative energy causes a spiritual or existential pain.

Purposeful conversation with someone whose whole attention is on what we say and equally what we are not saying can really help.  Perceptive words, formed into reflections of your own thoughts and provocative questions,  can help you pinpoint the exact problem and shift your perspective.  Exploring new ideas about the future together in a safe confidential conversation can give you confidence to take action.

I am a trained life, leadership and creativity coach and available to be just that person; someone who can help you keep moving along your personal creative path.

COMING IN THE AUTUMN!

Words are containers of ancient wisdom and contemporary meaning.

My love for Jewish learning has grown into a slow-growing personal passion project called LISHMAH meaning  “For the sake of it”.  It is currently at a research and development stage.

LISHMAH aims ultimately to offer a unique combination of coaching exercises, creative thought, journalling prompts and Jewish learning. Available to all who are interested, but particularly converts and those reclaiming a Jewish heritage , its particular aim is to resource Jews by choice who wish to design their continued personal Jewish learning journey.

If that intrigues you, come on over to the LISHMAH site, take a look around and sign up to get all the new material as soon as its created and to contribute your views to the research and development stage.
