Judaism uses a lunar-solar calendar and there is a special blessing/ ritual for the waxing moon called Kiddush Levanah or Birkat Ha-Levana. In the Talmud Rabbi Yishmael likens greeting the moon to greeting the feminine aspect of God. The disappearance and appearance of the moon is also a symbol for the potential for humans to experience renewal, a powerful metaphor for art originally made to be displayed in a gallery in a refugee centre.
