Learning any new language and culture is a time-consuming endeavour, one that can last the rest of a lifetime. In the Talmud the Rabbi’s discussed their struggles and distractions when studying, including talking about when they needed to study.  Some Rabbis considered that they were ‘day workers’ and that the night was for sleep. Reish Lakish however said that ‘the moon was created only for Torah study by its light’. Given that Reish Lakish had given up his studies in his youth to become a bandit and work at a gladiator circus, maybe like those of us who come late to a language he needed extra time to study!
